How to Play Spikeball: A Quick Guide for Backyard Fun

If you’re looking for a fast-paced, competitive, and insanely fun outdoor game, look no further than Spikeball. This action-packed sport has exploded in popularity in recent years—and for good reason. It’s easy to learn, super portable, and perfect for backyards, parks, and beaches.

At Outdoor Games ‘N’ Sports, we’re all about helping you discover the best ways to stay active and have fun outside. So here’s everything you need to know to get started with Spikeball.

What Is Spikeball?

Spikeball is a 2 vs. 2 team sport that combines elements of volleyball and four squares. The main piece of equipment is a small, round net placed at ankle height, with a ball that’s about the size of a softball. The objective? Hit the ball off the net in such a way that the opposing team can’t return it.

What You Need to Play

  • 1 Spikeball net (adjustable for different playing styles)

  • 1 Spikeball ball

  • 4 players (2 per team)

  • A flat playing surface (grass, sand, or indoors)

You can grab everything you need in a Spikeball set right here at Outdoor Games ‘N’ Sports.

The Basic Rules

  1. Start the Serve
A rally begins with a serve: the server hits the ball down onto the net so it bounces up toward the opposing team. Players must stand at least 6 feet from the net when serving.

  2. Three Touches Max
Each team has up to three hits (like volleyball) to return the ball by bouncing it off the net. Think: bump, set, spike—but with the net instead of a court.

  3. No Sides After the Serve
Once the ball is served, there are no boundaries or sides. Players can move 360° around the net to chase, dive, and return the ball.

  4. Scoring
Games are usually played to 11, 15, or 21 points, and a team must win by 2. Points are scored when:

    • The opposing team fails to return the ball

    • The ball hits the rim or the ground

    • A team double-hits or carries the ball

Tips for Beginners

  • Keep your hits controlled, not too hard—especially when learning.

  • Communicate with your teammate to avoid bumping into each other.

  • Stay light on your feet—quick movement is key!

  • Want a challenge? Try playing on sand for extra cardio and softer landings.

Why Spikeball?

Spikeball is great for:

  • Backyard BBQs

  • Beach days

  • Camping trips

  • Youth group activities

  • Competitive sports leagues

It’s a perfect mix of athleticism, strategy, and pure fun, and it’s one of the easiest games to set up and pack away.
